Fruit Trees? Not anymore!

the shopping district of Orchard Road...

semi-overcast 32 °C

Orchard Road in Singapore is the main shopping and entertainment place. There are many local people who go here, it's not just for the tourists. It has a great cultural feeling to it. We nearly spent our whole day just walking up and down the street taking in all the large and unique shopping boutiques!

It recently went through a 40 million dollar revamping so it felt like we were the first ones to ever visit. Orchard Road is a one way street and got its name from the fruit orchards that use to be on both sides of the street, but as with most things they were removed to make way for shopping and entertainment.

We did get to see some old black and white photos of what it was like before, what a change its gone through! The first shop that opened on Orchard Road was TANGS which opened up in 1934 and ever since then the shopping selection has exploded.

Orchard Road contains malls, restaurants, coffee chains, night clubs and hotels. So many things to do! It’s also (Ironically…) where the official residence of the President of Singapore is. I bet you could spot his wife in any one of the shops at any given time! Haha.

There were stores we’d never even heard of before but there were also a few familiar ones too! Like Toy’s R Us! It was good to be a kid again! If you love to shop then this is the place for you.

Just a warning, be careful when crossing the streets because traffic runs on the opposite side of the road than we're use too. We nearly got a rude reminder of it too, Peter stepped off the curb to the surprise of some poor driver who swerved and just barely missed him! Good times! Haha.

When you visit Orchard Road you have to try the famous ice cream sandwiches. These sandwiches are ice cream squished together by two pieces of regular bread.

There are many things you can buy on Ochard Road, we highly recommend picking up some unique Singapore woodcraft. It’s the traditional souvenir to bring back home with you!

It's too bad they removed the orchards! But it still looks like a pretty place to visit!
