Today we visited two more Ethnic Areas both of which were new and exciting. Our first stop was Geylang Serai at the Paya Lebar stop on the East West MRT Line.

Geylang Serai is the cultural heart of the Malay culture in Singapore. Our main interest in this area was the Malay Village, which is sort of like Heritage Park in Calgary. It takes you back to the 1950’s and lets you experience it for yourself. Also, there was a museum here which showcases the tools and art that came out of this period.

We hopped back on the East West line and headed to the Bugis stop to go to Kampong Glam. This was the former area of the Malay royalty and elite. We saw the old “Sultan’s Palace which has since been turned into a Malay Heritage Center.

We walked down to Arab street, which is a fashion locale. We also saw the Sultan Mosque which can accommodate up to 5,000 Muslims in congregational prayers.

It was a great day, can’t wait for tomorrow!
